Scratchbot

“Scratchbot” is Henry Evans’ name for Persona, a bed-mounted robotic arm with three joints developed to assist him with daily tasks. Henry is a mute quadriplegic, and Scratchbot lets him scratch is face using his head for control. Persona capabilities include direct control via internet-based interface, automated control for specific repetitive tasks, and replaceable end effecter.

Scratchbot (aka “Persona”) was the University of Pennsylvania senior project of Jonathan Cousins, Rafi Pelles, Brandon Jennings, Jon Nino and Iason Stamatiadis. For this work, the team won the Couloucoundis Prize for best senior design presentation 2014.

Henry Evans is really enjoying his new-found control of his bed. His nephew, Henry Clever, built an interface that allows Henry to control all of his bed’s adjustments from his computer, instead of from the hand-held remote. In this video he uses his automatic bed to dance.
